Healthier New Year Resolution #6 – Quit Smoking

Quit SmokingSmoking is one of the most common habits in the word, and one of the worst too. We are all aware of how dangerous smoking is, but perhaps if you learn more about it you will find it that much easier to quit smoking because you will understand the serious and even life threatening effects that smoking can have on your life. Thus, quit smoking makes the #6 in our Healthier New Year Resolution series.

The damaging effects of smoking have been known for centuries, but are really only now being taken as seriously as they should be.

Smoking And Your Health

The effects that smoking has on your health are truly monumental. When you smoke, less oxygen reaches your lungs and in turn you will find it harder to breathe. Then there is nicotine which is one of the main ingredients in cigarettes, and this is the addictive stuff in cigarettes. This is what stimulates your central nervous system and gets your heart pumping faster. Over time, smoking will end up obstructing the small airways in the lungs and destroying the air sacs there.

Lung diseases such as chronic pulmonary disease and bronchitis can develop as a result of smoking, and you may even have a heart attack, especially if you have been smoking for an extended period of time. Not only does smoking have an incredibly negative effect on your heart, but as well on every single part of your circulatory system. Your blood will become thicker and stickier, and the lining of your blood vessels will become damaged as well. There are many harmful substances contained in cigarette smoke, including tar, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and free radicals. The almost humorous part is that we regularly do everything we can to avoid these types of substances but then breathe them in purposely every time we smoke.

Tar in particular can be very damaging to the health, not only internally but physically as well. It causes damage to the mouth, teeth and gums, and will make your smile horrid. There are also various other chemicals in smoke that damage the lungs and this includes hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and more. When they react with cholesterol, plaques are formed and in turn this greatly increases the risk of arterial damage and stroke.

These are why one should quit smoking once and for all!

Getting Help

If you have decided that you want to make your New Year’s resolution to stop smoking, then there are a number of treatment options that are available to you and which you should be aware of.

Stop Smoking With Nicotine Patches

One is the nicotine patch, which is now sold without prescription around the world. The amount of time that you should wear each patch will vary, depending on the brand you decide to go with and the degree of potency the patch has. These patches work by continuously delivering a small amount of nicotine through your skin. This helps to take the edge off while you are trying to quit smoking, and although they typically work very well you will need to keep in mind that because they only deliver a very small amount of nicotine, you are still likely to have cravings and experience some withdrawal, especially during the time immediately following your decision to quit.

Stop Smoking With Nicotine Gums

There is also the nicotine gum, which is the second most commonly used stop smoking aid. This gum is available in different strengths and dosage levels and one of the best features to this product is that you have control over how many pieces of gum you chew a day. That way if you have particularly strong cravings you will be able to chew more gum and in turn this will help with the withdrawal symptoms. Also, unlike the patch, the nicotine chewing gum produces more of the peaks and valleys that you may feel with smoking. They will help to ease the symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal but again you are still likely to experience some cravings. You will typically have to use this gum for about a three months time period, although this will vary from one situation to the next. It really all depends on the amount of determination and motivation that you have, as well as on how long you have been a smoker for and therefore how dependent you are on cigarettes.

Most people are not aware of it, but quitting smoking has been compared to quitting a heavy drug such as heroine, because the withdrawal symptoms are so similar. It is therefore completely understandable as to how difficult it can be to quit smoking and why some people try several times to no avail. It is really one of the most difficult things in the world to do, but remember that the effort and difficult here will all be more than worth it once you do finally quit for good.

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things you are ever going to have to do without a doubt, but the point of the matter is that you can do it. Believe in yourself and use this or any other stop smoking aid to help get you through if you need to, at least until you get over the hurdle of the first couple of months.
