Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, afflicts 8 to 10 percent of kids. Supposedly a chronic disorder, ADHD messes with the way they focus, judge, and control what he or she is saying or doing.

In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, US swimmer Michael Phelps was front, center and everywhere after winning an unprecedented number of gold medals. Less press coverage swirled around his teammate Ryan Lochte, in comparison.

In Beijing, Phelps’ record-breakers in the 200-m and 400-m individual medleys barely edged out what Lochte clocked in. Then at the world swimming championships in 2011, Lochte avenged himself. Not only did Lochte collect more golds than Phelps; he also broke the latter’s record in the 200-m individual medley. An irked Phelps reportedly admitted he had been resting on his laurels for too long and vowed to make up for it in the forthcoming London Olympics.

Lochte has always claimed that Phelps’ gilded prowess constantly pushes him to race faster. Relaying his peers’ feedback to the media, Lochte said that he could be the greatest swimmer of all time with Phelps out of the way.

Whereas Phelps senses his career peak coming with the London Games, Lochte sets his sights further, on Rio de Janeiro 2016, or if he feels lucky, 2020. He is admittedly still having so much fun in swimming and sees no urgent reason for stopping soon.

Raised in New York and Florida, Ryan learned his first strokes as a baby from his mother Ileana, a Cuban immigrant. Ileana would include Ryan in her local swimming lessons but took care not to shower him with deferential treatment; his dad Steven, also a swimmer, was even sterner. Ryan said he owes the foundation of all his techniques in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle to his mother. By age 8 or 9, Ryan had begun to develop a penchant for racing.

For all these, Lochte emphasizes that swimming is not the be-all of his existence, although he feels responsible for propagating the sport, mostly by coloring his public persona. This is the same man who infamously accepted his silver medal at the 2007 world championships while flaunting diamond braces patterned after his music idol Lil Wayne. In his spare time, Lochte pursues such non-aquatic activities as basketball and skateboarding.

Training under coach Gregg Troy, Lochte was a sensation at the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska on June 25. There, Lochte and Phelps easily outpaced 50 others to join the US swim team.

Before this year’s trials, Lochte had undergone a taxing regimen that encompassed two hours of pool training nine times a week. These are in addition to two hours of weightlifting and three hours of core-strength training away from water.

Lochte has truly come a long way since his first Olympics in Athens, where he had finished second to Phelps in the trials. Now he is being hyped as the usurper to Phelps’ throne; Time and Vogue recently made him their cover boy. Surely he would repay this attention by never settling for second fiddle again.

Mounting evidence has found a link between physical activity – any movement using muscles that improves fitness level – and reduced risk of cancer recurrence. In consequence then, physical activity may increase your cancer survival rate. If anything, ramping up physical activeness may help you cope with adverse effects attendant on cancer treatment, e.g. depression and fatigue. It may even reduce your risk for other conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

UK-based cancer organization Macmillan has recently enlisted the support of BAFTA-winning actress and comedian Jo Brand for Move More, its campaign to get cancer patients moving.

“People will look at me and go, why’s that fat, unfit, menopausal, middle-aged woman telling us what to do? She surely never takes any exercise. Well you’re wrong there, because I do!”

Brand is joined by no less than the National Cancer Institute in America and the American College of Sports Medicine in promoting physical activeness during and after cancer treatment. Whereas in the past doctors would tell you to rest in excess following treatment, times have changed. Lately, the two organizations have advocated the resumption of daily activities as soon as possible after treatment and slowly increasing to recommended levels of physical activity.

“I’m just trying to spread the word and upturn the myth that actually you should be resting after cancer treatment. You shouldn’t, you should be getting out and doing any kind of exercise you can. You don’t have to run a marathon, but you just have to up your activity levels,” Brand said.

Some evidence suggested that taking up physical activity and retaining a leaner body may cut the risk of a cancer returning after remission. In the US, a study showed that breast cancer patients who walked for 3-5 hours on a weekly average cut their risk for recurrence. In another research, brisk walking for a minimum of three hours weekly has been shown to cut the risk of developing early-stage prostate cancer.

These researches are inconclusive and wanting of more duplicable evidence however. Even so, there are some telling indicators that physical activity has an unsubtle effect on cancer. Even the smallest raise in your physical activity can make all the difference.

Benefits of physical activity

Latching on to physical activity may compel cancer to remit and help you recover from its oft-stressful treatments. Physical activity holds significant health corollaries against cancer, many of which you may hitherto have not heard of. If you knew about these benefits, you would truly be motivated to move more like Jo Brand.

Done regularly, physical activity can help manage, if not thwart, adverse effects that may arise from cancer treatment. It is just as recommended thereafter, seeing as some side effects emerge as late as years following treatment. Some side effects are even permanent.

Cancer therapy is notorious, among others, for leaving you fatigued for months after treatment. Moderate or even just light physical activity, e.g. short walks, yoga, and tai chi, can help you pick up energy. However, start slow and slowly increase intensity, lest you end up tiring yourself even more.

Physical activity can also help control stress, anxiety, and depression: ever-present problems resulting from cancer therapy. It does so by compelling the secretion of mood-enhancing hormones, i.e. endorphins, in the body. At the same time, it helps hold back the body’s stress hormones, making for a better night’s sleep, if anything.

Endorphins also help alleviate joint pain caused by certain hormonal treatments prescribed with chemotherapy. Physical activity of itself can help relieve joint pain by strengthening your muscles and improving your range of movement, which may be limited by certain kinds of cancer surgery. The more flexible joints are, the less likely they are to be painful.

Walking, dancing, resistance training, and other weight-bearing activities can help strengthen your bones, especially when they’re at their frailest. Osteoporosis or bone thinning is known to result from hormonal treatments for prostate and breast cancer as well as chemotherapy-induced menopause.

Resistance training, on the other hand, is the solution to making your muscles stronger during and after cancer treatment. Muscle strength declines during this period because of longer hours of bed rest and steroids given with chemotherapy.

Steroids in chemotherapy can conspire with your sedentary lifestyle to make you gain weight, exacerbating the situation. Obesity and overweight heightens your risk for breast, bowel and womb cancers. In light of this, being more physically active can decrease your risk of developing a new type of cancer, while maintaining a healthy weight can slash the possibility of a cancer coming back.

Being more physically activity may help you regain your pre-treatment appetite too. Take short walks every day, and you would see for yourself. In addition, physical activity alongside a high-fiber diet helps counter constipation caused by particular chemotherapy drugs.

You may feel overwhelmed, with not so much an idea as how to start.

Remember that any amount of physical activity is light years better than not moving at all. Physical activity offers infinite, hitherto-unknown opportunities for cancer recovery. If Jo Brand can do it, her pounds and all, so can you.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs just orphaned humankind yesterday, just months after undergoing chemotherapy at the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California. In the last weeks of his life, he showed up in public as a gaunt replica of himself. Sunken cheeks, scrawny legs, and out-and-out weight loss all indicated his suffering under chemotherapy and its near-omnipresent twin, radiotherapy. Jobs unwittingly hastened his demise by way of these orthodox cancer treatments.

It is no secret that Jobs, a civilization-changing visionary who revolutionized personal computing around the globe, sought chemotherapy like any other mortal. But it was only an open secret that he would jet off to Switzerland from California under the cover of night to seek radiotherapy at the University of Basel. Ex-Apple executive Jerry York himself shared this story to Fortune Magazine.

In publishing this story, Fortune Magazine also highlighted speculations that Steve Jobs secretly underwent a liver transplant, basically on demand. The rumors outraged many less privileged members of society who had to queue for a liver donor.

There is no debate then to the fact that Jobs exhausted all his options in mainstream cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Alas, even Steve Jobs could not flout the ways of biochemistry any more than stars like Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, and Peter Jennings.

Chemotherapy is tantamount to poisoning the body and eventually leads to the collapse of organ function. Yet countless patients still submit to it every year. Modern society in general still believes in mainstream cancer treatments and pays for it dearly.

For all his smarts, Steve Jobs apparently only had a modicum of understanding about this simple fact.  The cancer industry virtually spirited his life away when he could have continued changing the world – in ways only he could imagine – well into his 90s. Jobs was 56.

Then again, the medical establishment had no hand in the disease. Steve Jobs’ cells may have gone rogue because of deficiencies in nutrients, exposure to toxins from his environment, or a combination of both.

Some studies seem to point that taking vitamin D and selenium may be the best-performing preventive against cancer. But the American Cancer Society and all the cancer NGOs do not endorse them. After all, making cheap preventives widely accessible to everyone would only take away from the cancer industry’s profitability.

Rotten Apple

Apple, driven by profit more than anything, mirrors the avarice of the cancer industry. This has nothing to do with Steve Jobs but rather the people who milked his cerebral gifts for their own self-seeking gain.

For one, iPhones have been criticized as of late as devices that covertly track your location, information they can easily transmit back to the Apple base. Also, iPhones are notorious for being locked, requiring apps to be bought only through the App Store. To date, there is no iPhone sold unlocked. Consequently, owners have to resort to jail-breaking software to squeeze out of Apple’s imperious control.

Apple has become the very entity it famously resisted in a TV ad: Big Brother in the George Orwell novel 1984. It is now the despot against whom it claimed to rally, thanks to the ravenous executives that continue to proliferate in Apple.

Jobs frequently comes off as the altruistic entrepreneur but his ideas for innovation always seem to be embroiled in his company’s drive for profit. This is the same man whom Apple sacked despite him being its co-founder. Unethical corporate interests have easily sidetracked the core values that Jobs envisioned Apple should be upholding.

This serves as a cautionary tale to all bright people, famous or not, to always be on their guard around venture capitalists. Their sole onus in life is to prey on individuals who have big ideas.

In hindsight, Steve Jobs’ greatest legacy extends beyond the gizmos he invented. He passes on to an endless loop of generations the example of remaining faithful to one’s vision. With his technological innovations, Jobs illustrated how persisting with one’s vision far outweighs the ambition to become richer or more lucrative.

Rather than reflect integrity and uprightness, landing the cover of an IT or business publication only shows the person at hand’s viability to the industry. The business community tends to fawn over geniuses who help consumers spend more, not geniuses who share world-changing ideas that come for free. Conspiracy theorists would help you much on this subject; just look up the subject of free energy inventors. Many of them died in mysterious circumstances before one knew their inventions or their plans of them at least.

Not to take away from his gilt-edged intelligence, but Steve Jobs’ products dovetailed with consumerist culture and corporate greed. Investors and businessmen just wanted him to sell more iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. Steve Jobs is being venerated by these people not for his innate compassion for humankind but for his ability to generate profits for business types.

Over 12 months or so, the world would embrace the iPhone 5. Old phones are gong to accumulate some more in toxic landfills; factory workers are going to sweat and bleed once again. Steve Jobs has passed on but the officious greed of the people who rode on his coattails has not.

BMI or body mass index provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. Your BMI is based on your height and weight. PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel recently dared students to drop out of school, receive $100,000, and change the world. Now everyone has heard of college dropouts like Bill Gates who have gone on to alter the face of the earth. Kickouts are another story altogether.

Illuminated here are some of history’s most fabled college expulsions:

Harrison Ford

Ford was expelled from Ripon College in Wisconsin after flunking a philosophy subject in his senior year. To add insult to injury, he was expelled three days before graduating. Not that he minded – he has since become one of the most bankable actors of all time. His movies have grossed $6 billion worldwide, half of which in the US alone.

Richard Buckminster Fuller

Harvard expelled one Bucky Fuller not once but twice. The multi-hyphenate scientist was kicked out initially for splurging his entire wad on a revelry with a vaudeville troupe. He then proceeded to build the first geodesic dome; coin hitherto-unknown words like “Spaceship Earth,” synergetics, and ephemeralization; and pen more than 30 books.

Robert Frost

Robert Frost may have lied to biographers; he would have them believe he dropped out of Dartmouth College.

But some scholars contend that Dartmouth kicked him out after he trimmed a schoolmate’s hair in such a way that it created a bizarre shape at the back.

Salvador Dali

No teacher at any art school is worthy of evaluating Salvador Dalí’s work. When Dalí himself said so as a student at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, he was expelled for “disturbing the peace.” That proved to be a blessing in disguise. He left for Paris soon afterwards and rubbed elbows with Picasso. Now he is revered worldwide as a surrealist painter of the first order.

Samuel L. Jackson

Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement was roiling to a boil when Samuel Jackson was still studying at Morehouse College in Georgia.

The future award-winning actor was expelled in his junior year when he took part in one protest, which trapped the school board in a building for 48 hours.

Ted Kennedy

At the end of his second semester, and anxious about maintaining his eligibility for athletics for the next year, the youngest Kennedy brother was kicked out of Harvard bribing a friend who was knowledgeable on the subject take his Spanish language examination for him.

Ted Turner

CNN’s founder went out of Brown University unceremoniously. He had been a star student there, captain of the sailing team and vice-presiding over the debating union. Notwithstanding, the university found it unbecoming of him to live with his girlfriend in his dormitory room and promptly booted him out. Today, his television network is richer than Brown University.

William Randolph Hearst

Before William Randolph Hearst began his empire of newspapers and magazines, he had been kicked out of Harvard for presenting his teachers with silver chamber pots with their names inscribed on them.

He later conquered the world as a publisher and lawmaker.

Woody Allen

Movie director par excellence Woody Allen was expelled from New York University for failing multiple subjects. It turned out his creativity could not be contained in school. Aside from directing movies, Allen is a master at the jazz clarinet and an adroit thespian. In a piece he wrote for the New York Times, Allen sardonically said his alma mater “had the foresight and good taste to expel me many years ago.”

Checking in the loony bin to get help for mental illness can be a double-edged sword. On one side you are improving your chances of bouncing back. On the other side people denigrate you for being so much as associated with a mental facility.

When famous persons get committed to a mental institution, this inconvenience is multiplied tenfold. Their immediate social circles are not the only one in the know; the entire planet is. Before long the blogosphere is already roasting them alive. This is how fame collects its dues.

Fame may have brought these celebrities there in the first place. Mental conditions seem to dovetail well with popularity, as many people in this list would demonstrate.

Britney Spears

2007 – pop culture pundits remember this as the year Britney Spears literally went lady gaga. Coming from a divorce the year before, the pop superstar cranked up the crazy and shaved her head. It has been a downward spiral since.

In 2008 Spears finally checked into the psychiatric ward of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The weeklong meds there may have done her some good as she released a well-received album later that year.

Carrie Fisher

No one would have thought Carrie Fisher’s nerves would be having a Star Wars of their own. Decades after her star turn in that saga, Carrie Fisher latched on to drugs and alcohol to treat a looming insanity.

At 40, she finally entered a mental institution for bipolar disorder. There, she would not sleep for days on end and think persons on the TV screen were directly talking to her.

With the right meds however, she was able to turn her life around. To this day, the erstwhile Princess Leia is undergoing treatment, including electroshock therapy.

James Taylor

James Taylor is unique in this list for positively seeing through his nine-month stay in the funny farm. He even sounds grateful for it on his hit song “Fire and Rain.” Apparently the stay kept him from serving in the Vietnam War, thereby saving him.

James was near graduating from high school when a deep depression set in, forcing him into Massachusetts’ McLean Hospital in 1965. Making the most of his time there, he continued studying through the facility’s partner school, Arlington.

Joey Ramone

Punk rock king Joey Ramone endured schizophrenia and social anxiety while growing up. But he did not enter a mental hospital for years – until he brandished a knife at his mother and sibling. He remained there for a month.

In the years thereafter, Joey reformed himself as a rock god, worshipped by thousands of sad boys like him.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was as famous for her feeble mental state as she was for her blonde bimbo act. In hindsight it was her genes that directed her fate. Her mother also has a mental illness and perished during institutionalization.

Historians know Marilyn grew sick of being used like a rag by men in high places. She also yearned to be treated right by Hollywood, to be given roles that showcased her acting range. In 1961, a doctor misled her into checking into a mental hospital, the very place she was scared of.

Life was not any better after she got out. Men in power continued passing her around until her untimely demise.

Margot Kidder

Fans of the Superman movies would never forget that scene in which a nutty, nude Lois Lane hides around a woodpile.

In a curious case of life imitating the art, the actress who portrayed her, Margot Kidder, was committed to a mental facility in 1996 for manic depression.

Melancholy Lift - relieves feelings of melancholy, sadness, grief and weepiness

Vivien Leigh

Vivien Leigh’s legendary beauty belies her brain’s disarray. Even during the peak years of her popularity, she languished in manic depression. But no one in the movie-going public had any idea. Doctors were notorious then for covering mental illnesses up and employing crude treatments for them.

Vivien was winning Academy Awards even as the mental disease continued hounding her. It came to a head with an admission to a mental facility plus sessions of electroshock therapy. Hollywood urban legend has it that the sessions burned parts of her head.

Winona Ryder

Her 1990 stint in a mental hospital foreshadowed her performance in 1999’s Girl, Interrupted. Exhausted, anxious and depressed, at a time when she had just withdrawn from The Godfather: Part III cast, Winona was institutionalized.

She checked out after only a few weeks. In interviews afterwards, she said her confinement was for naught, that it offered nothing in the way of denouement to her troubles. Years later, Winona was embroiled in a shoplifting incident.

Yoko Ono

John Lennon’s paramour attempted suicide after divorcing her first husband in the US. Yoko’s parents were so concerned they returned her to Japan to be institutionalized.

In the run-up to her historic April 29, 2011 wedding to Prince William, the former Kate Middleton dramatically lost weight. With that the Duchess of Cambridge unwittingly reinforced “brideorexia” in the minds of brides-to-be the world over.

Six months before the royal wedding, a biography placed Kate Middleton’s weight at nearly 130 pounds. But around the time of the nuptials, Buckingham Palace stated Kate weighs around 100 pounds. She had been known to wear size 8 dresses. On the big day, she was able to fit in a size 2 Alexander McQueen gown.

During its coverage of the ceremony, ABC News TV immediately drew attention to Kate’s “lean frame.” Such figure, the news outlet ventured further, could possibly create “questions about the newly titled Duchess of Cambridge’s health.”

In pop culture, “brideorexia” refers to an intense desire in brides to drastically thin down in time for wedding day. Considering that approximately 2.3 million brides wed in America each year, “brideorexia” is nothing short of a public health emergency. Compounding this fact is that millions of out-of-shape Americans watched the waifish Kate Middleton walk the aisle on TV.

Obesity researchers could not help but notice the unhealthy rate of Kate Middleton’s weight loss. Losing 20 pounds in 5 months may mean Ms. Middleton lost 1 pound every 7.5 days until April 29. Experts have always cautioned against weight loss of more than 1 pound a week. To Kate’s credit however, a sports nutritionist in the ABC coverage sized up the duchess as having shed no more than 14 pounds.

In her new role as monarch, Kate Middleton is not showing any signs of abdicating – from her newfound figure. UK’s state media still show the future queen looking very thin in photos. Hollywood Life, meanwhile, noticed how the Duchess of Cambridge’s waist looked “wafer-thin” on June 9, when she graced a children’s event that, ironically, stressed “the importance of health and fitness.” Scores of other witnesses throughout the UK also noted how Kate looked so “gaunt” and “emaciated” in public.

In July, Buckingham Palace gave the public a chance to view the Sarah Burton-designed wedding dress in an exhibition. Those who have seen it either remarked about the consummate craftsmanship that went into the dressmaking or the dress’ tininess.

British media quoted Ms. Middleton as saying that her drastic weight reduction “was all part of the wedding plan.”

Middleton ate like the French

Word went around that Prince William’s wife used the Dukan Diet to achieve her wispy shape. Even Kate’s mother Carole resorted to Dukan to shave off pounds before the nuptials, the Los Angeles Times claimed. True to form, Kate’s choice of diet sparked a fascination with Dukan in Hollywood, where slimming down to a wraith has always been the order.

Invented by Dr. Pierre Dukan, this eating regimen is essentially a Gallic twist on the high-protein, low-carb Atkins diet. The Dukan Diet is a huge hit in Dr. Dukan’s native France, where it sold five million copies. Due to renewed interest after the royal nuptials, a new American edition hit bookshops lately, this time with a prominent picture of a skinny Kate.

Then as now, nutritionists and dietitians in general have not warmed towards the Dukan Diet. They belittle Dukan as a shortsighted way to lose weight, striking at first in its results but hazardous in the long run. High-protein diets, over the long term, are no better than most calorie-restrictive plans, they say.

According to the American Dietetic Association, the Dukan plan obviates fruits, vegetables, and other important food groups, depriving dieters of vital nutrients. Plus, Dukan is known to cause less-than-queenly adverse effects, e.g. bad breath, mouth dryness, constipation, and fatigue.

New heir to the throne

As per tradition, the Duchess of Cambridge is duty-bound to sire a child who would become the British Commonwealth’s sovereign someday. But the duchess’ subjects fear Kate would be compromising her duties by keeping her figure too thin.

Ob-gynecologists and pediatricians all know either rigorous deprivation of food or heavy physical activity can lead to amenorrhea. This is a condition wherein a woman does not go through periods and ovulation, hampering conception. It is likely to occur in individuals whose body compositions are so lean that they always stay in starvation mode. In this condition, the ovaries have difficulty developing and releasing healthy eggs.

Should a skinny bride become pregnant anyway, she runs a high risk of preterm delivery. Or she may deliver an infant with low birth weight. Moreover, a highly restrictive diet during pregnancy puts essential nutrients out of reach of the developing baby.

Kate: Diana Part 2?

If her weight reduction does not let up, Kate could be following in the steps of Prince William’s late mother, Princess Diana. She memorably told Andrew Morton – then writing the 1992 tell-all Diana: Her True Story – that she suffered from bulimia and anorexia nervosa in secret.

Lady Di revealed she would binge on find and force herself to throw up as she grappled with her condition, which has been called “The Princess Diana Eating Disorder.” Despite her affluence, beauty and social status, Diana had a twisted self-image attendant on the disease. If she did eat, the intake never went beyond 700 calories a day. Also, she would wash down any food with laxatives.

A Princess’ Duty

Besides siring royal babies, Kate Middleton is also bound by another duty: to lead by example. As one of the hottest women on earth today, she could set a precedent by advocating balanced diets, healthy lifestyle and discouraging binge-eating. These are the least she could do to undo the brideorexia phenomenon she inadvertently fortified.

Literature has a cache of some of the most amoral women to rival those in real life. They prove that villainy is not consigned to the boys.

Many of these fictional women are wives and girlfriends, unfortunately for the men caught in their web of deceit and lies. These evil women face counts of everything from psychological abuse to out-and-out murder. Watch out for real-life equivalents of these bad, bad girls (spoilers ahead):

Alison Poole, Story of My Life

Alison, at face value, reads like any other free spirit rebelling against her father. As a serial sexpot and pothead however, Alison was exceptionally disloyal to her bond-trading boyfriend Dean. Her insecurities were enough to inflict irreversible pain on him.

Author Jay McInerney based Alison’s character on Rielle Hunter, the woman with whom former senator John Edwards cheated on his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth.

Carmen, Carmen

Probably due to misogyny, women in power are often depicted as sordid in fiction. The irresistible, seductive Gypsy Carmen exemplifies this literary theme so well. She was a bad influence to her lover Don Jose, whom she diverted to a life of sedition and other crimes.

She then replaced Jose with a bullfighter. In a fit of rage, Jose slashed her in public.

Cora, The Postman Always Rings Twice

Femme fatales populate crime novels but Cora stands among their first order.  Alongside her drifter boyfriend, Cora schemed to murder her husband Nick to come into his fortune. At first she was unsuccessful, only making Nick amnesiac. She succeeded the second time around.

The cops eventually got wind of her misdeeds yet she was able to elude incarceration. A speeding car ultimately dragged her to hell.

Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby

Daisy is representative of many ladies of her era, compromising romance for a life of comfort with an affluent douche.

She inadvertently killed two characters in the book, Jay Gatsby and Myrtle Wilson.

Delilah, Samson and Delilah

Delilah set a precedent for all bitches during her reign of terror in ancient Israel. She caught the eye of the heaven-sent Samson, a tough guy with superhuman strength.

Unknown to Samson, Delilah connived with the Philistines to discover the secret to his might. She chopped off his mane and handed over Samson, now a weakling, to the Philistines. Samson’s hair eventually grew back and he avenged himself in a blur of falling pillars. The Old Testament does not say what happened to the wench however.

Dominique Francon, The Fountainhead

Ms. Francon’s primary purpose throughout the book was to ruin the work of the man she loved, the headstrong architect Howard Roark. To do this, she went out on a limb to marry Roark’s nemesis Toohey and serve as his accomplice.

Dominique is an unlikely villain to earn a spot in this list. She did everything only out of love for Roark. Even so, her methods are one of literature’s most appalling.

Gertrude, Hamlet

After her king-husband died, Gertrude lost no time to marry his brother Claudius.

His new love was later accused of his brother’s murder. By this point the reader knows who else to blame.

Gertrude also gets additional points for evilness by carrying on an incestuous relationship with the title character.

Lady Brett Ashley, The Sun Also Rises

Lady Brett Ashley is alcoholic and a bona fide slut, keeping not one but four guys’ hopes up. She then elopes with a strapping bullfighter, whom she inevitably dumps too.

In one memorable part of the book, she skewers the heart of protagonist Jake by telling him they could have ended up together – had he not been impotent.

Ouch!

Lady Macbeth, Macbeth

She is the power-tripping consort of the title character of one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies. Batshit crazy, Lady Macbeth was hell-bent on enthroning her husband.

To that end, she drugged people in order for Macbeth to get hitched with Duncan. She then shifted the blame on the servants by marking them with blood while they were sleeping.

Lady Macbeth was killed off-stage, a death which always seemed inadequate for her many haters in the audience.
