Men Can Now Get Pregnant!

A Pregnant Man - Lee Mingwei
One of the processes widely expanded by modern science is human reproduction. The first tube baby was introduced in the year 1978. The event that was started as an experiment turns out to become the pioneer of fertility treatment. To realize that babies can be made outside the human body is an astonishing act. Complicated as it is and more shocking to know that how pregnancy is also made possible to men.

Since only females are capable of being pregnant, male pregnancy is kind of twisted. A same method used on test tube babies, a method called in vitro fertilization (IVF), making male impregnation which is also the usual recommended treatment offered for woman without fallopian or defective fallopian tubes. Through IVF, it is viable for the eggs to travel from the ovary to the uterus.  This made possible through the technique of mixing up the father’s sperm to the eggs of the mother inside the lab. The embryo that will be produced from this mixture will be placed back into the uterus. This process will allow the embryo to develop normally until it is time for birth.

The function of the IVF is taken farther than its usual purpose at RYT hospital. Through IVF, pregnancy is made feasible to men as well. A Taiwanese-born man, Mr Lee Mingwei is the first male subject who volunteered to attempt this procedure. The research for this clinical procedure is done by Dr Simone Lowell of RYT Hospital-Dwayne Medical Center, Attending Physician and Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Reproductive Medicine.

To make Mr. Lee receptive to the pregnancy, doses of female hormones are being taken orally at first. IVF is later used to impregnate him after days of careful monitoring. This is being done by implanting the embryo and placenta into his abdominal cavity, just under the peritoneum which is the surrounding lining.

Since the development of the fertilized egg didn’t occur in uterus, the impregnation is considered as an ectopic pregnancy. One of the main causes of death in pregnant women is ectopic pregnancy and in this case, Mr. Lee is also at risk. Death is possible when the ectopic ruptures causing huge risk of severe internal hemorrhage.

Since the expected pregnancy, Mr. Lee was advised to stop taking the hormones after implantation completed. Normally, after the embryo inside the cavity has developed itself, it will secrete enough hormones to maintain its own development and health.  Mr. Lee gestation period has been astoundingly normal and his health is being monitored carefully. To check on his condition, several other checks are also regularly done like fetal heart rates, chorionic villus sampling and ultrasound sampling.

A Cesarean section is the only option available for delivery. A Cesarean is an open surgery to remove the baby and the placenta where it involves the incision of the abdomen. The removal of the placenta is the most risky part considered during the delivery.  The placenta, during the gestation develops a tight connection with the vessels of its surrounding areas making it hard to remove and may cause massive internal bleeding. This may endanger Mr. Lee’s life.

Likely to be removed other structure with in the abdominal area such as the intestines and other parts of organs are possibly affected by the implantation. This is one modern innovation that was once unthinkable and only appeared in movie. A controversial real life issues where it has opposed religious practice and raised questions on gender functions. However, scientists and physicians are still very optimistic about this method. The method can help transsexuals who wants to bear children or maybe wives who can’t conceive due to sterility or a disease.
